Deepwater Experiential Education Project

Northwaters and Langskib Wilderness Programs have provided scholarships for over 30 years. David and Cynthia Knudsen have quietly provided funding for countless participants, however when demand for scholarships outgrew what NWL could afford, the Lopez Low Foundation stepped up with a major commitment and the Deepwater Experiential Education Project (DEEP) was founded.

DEEP is a not-for profit organization whose mission is to provide scholarships for deserving kids to attend Northwaters and Langskib and other wilderness programs with a strong emphasis on group process and personal growth. We seek out young people who have the potential to be leaders and provide them with experiences which empower them to take charge of their own lives and be of service to their communities.

DEEP has enjoyed tremendous support from the Northwaters and Langskib community. Every member of last summer’s staff contributed to DEEP. Since 2001 gifts made by or in memory of members of the NWL community total nearly $100,000. Most of those donations have gone directly to scholarships for students to attend wilderness programs lead by Northwaters and Langskib. As of January 2006 DEEP has funded over 130 students.

In 2006 DEEP Canada hopes to be approved as a charitable organization and will offer the opportunity for Canadian alumni of NWL to give tax-deductible donations for youth development in Canada.

Please donate to this great cause. Our goal this year is to raise $75,000 for scholarships. Every gift counts, no matter the amount. Beyond the obvious satisfaction of knowing your donation has helped to change a young life, as a donor you will hear stories from the trail sure to take you right back to the summers of your youth.
