Waypoint: Parent, Family and Small Group Navigation

NWL has a thirty-seven year history of providing people with high quality, in-depth personal growth experiences. We understand what people want when they go away for a week to this beautiful, far off setting--A balance of fun, challenge, introspection and adventure. Using the extraordinary beauty of the Temagami wilderness and the intensity of a committed learning community, the successful Temagami Experience and Vision Quest programs have created a groundswell of interest in other offering. We are excited by the opportunity to meet this interest with our inaugural program for parents- Waypoint: Creative Navigation for Life and Family.
A large part of the experience of NWL participants involves building trust, opening communities in which they learn to deal with difference, communicate effectively and develop critical feedback skills so essential to effective teams of any kind. Our view is that families represent a very unique type of team. Yet few families in our experience see themselves as performing to their potential.
We believe that the environment, culture and components used throughout youth and adult programs have great value for families and individuals. This program incorporates key activities and concepts ranging from paddling a canoe to the ancient ritual of the sweat lodge. Over the course of a fun and rejuvenating week, you will have the opportunity to learn:
- Ways of building ritual and celebration into the life of the family
- How to increase your repertoire for handling an array of conflict situations.
- Mentoring skills that motivate rather than create resistance.
- Problem - solving methods that are designed to engage the family in dialogue in a manner that supports openness and honesty
- New ways of setting critical boundaries.
- How to deal with the inevitable issues of power and authority.
Your home for this 7 day workshop is the Langskb base camp on a remote island in Temagami, Ontario. Perched on a rocky cliff, encircled by towering pines, Langskib boasts breathtaking views of land the Ojibway have called home for centuries. Housing is in cozy cabins, delicious meals are shared in a rustic log dining hall overlooking the Lake. Your week on the island will be free of outside influence; no phones, computers, demands or rigid schedules. You can expect to leave the island feeling renewed and inspired.
This is a rare opportunity to free yourself from the distractions of modern living and renew your vision for what is possible. Our focus is on creating a fun and enriching experience for everyone--you need not have any particular level of fitness to participate fully.
"The key to this program is developing new skills and examining old patterns that are built into the family and are no longer effective. Digging deep and practicing these new skills in a supportive learning environment is what we do best. We do what you can't learn in book. And, in all this, we provide opportunities to do some deep reflecting so that commitments to change are grounded in something more than good intentions".
